Israeli Election Stalemate Leaves No Clear Winner, Three Bad Options

Following the 2026 Israeli elections, all political factions are claiming victory, yet the results have created a political deadlock with no clear path forward. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party emerged as the largest, with its satellite parties, Religious Zionism and Otzma Yehudit, also securing significant gains. This outcome defied expectations, especially considering the consolidation of the "change bloc" parties against Netanyahu.

Despite Netanyahu's apparent strength, the post-election reality is grim. After three years of war, widespread reserve duty fatigue, and public anger over resource allocation and accountability for the October 7th attacks, Israel finds itself in a political stalemate. The entrenched bloc system has led to three undesirable scenarios.

The first possibility is a Netanyahu-led government with his original coalition partners, likely involving concessions to Haredi parties on the draft law in exchange for their support. This would preserve some right-wing achievements but perpetuate issues like unequal burden-sharing and a lack of accountability.

The second, less likely scenario, involves the "change bloc" breaking its central campaign promise by forming a government reliant on Arab parties. This move would alienate key partners like the leader of the National Unity party and Avigdor Lieberman, who would likely face significant political backlash without achieving their primary goal of unseating Netanyahu.

The third option is a repeat election. If the "change bloc" fails to unseat Netanyahu, voters may become disillusioned, leading to lower turnout and potentially strengthening Netanyahu's position by allowing him to campaign against a "left-wing government."

A fourth, albeit controversial, possibility exists: the "Just!", "Yachad", and Yisrael Beiteinu parties could break the "Only Not Bibi" bloc and join Netanyahu's government, excluding Haredi and Arab parties. This would require these parties to break election promises but could enable a right-wing government focused on service and burden-sharing issues, free from dependence on more extreme factions. Such a move would damage voter trust but allow these parties to influence policy directly. Netanyahu might also benefit by securing a legacy of achievements before his potential retirement.
