Professor Alan Dershowitz, a prominent international legal scholar, has called for an immediate halt to the trial of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In an exclusive interview with Channel 14, Dershowitz argued that revelations from the cross-examination of former Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit strengthen his position that the trial should never have commenced.
Dershowitz stated that Mandelblit's testimony indicated he was unaware of or did not approve certain actions, such as wiretapping Ariel or the confrontation with Nir Hefetz, which lacked the necessary legal approval. He believes these findings necessitate the termination of the proceedings, asserting that the case, always a matter of "degree," is not clear-cut and should not influence voters.
The legal expert suggested that some individuals within the police and prosecution may have acted on political motives, likening the situation to legal warfare or "weaponized law" used to gain political advantage, similar to proceedings against former U.S. President Donald Trump. Dershowitz had previously opposed the indictment, viewing the alleged offenses as ambiguous and not clearly defined.
He emphasized that a prime minister should not be prosecuted for years, especially during wartime, over matters of degree. Dershowitz reiterated that after reviewing Mandelblit's cross-examination, it is clear to him that the indictment should not have been filed under the Basic Law.
Dershowitz also warned that vague and broad laws could be used against political opponents on either side in the future, stressing that the issue extends beyond Netanyahu and concerns the rule of law and its potential misuse as a political weapon.
