Maccabi Rishon LeZion Player Refuses to Play After Fan Abuse

Maccabi Rishon LeZion player Oer Cornelius refused to play in the second half of a Winner Cup game against Hapoel Eilat on Monday, citing mental inability to continue due to curses directed at him by a small group of fans. The team won the game 87-85.

Cornelius, who previously played for Gilboa Galil, had an incident with Rishon LeZion fans years ago when he was growing up with the team. He told Channel Sport that he has matured significantly since then and understands the importance of a player on the court. "I believe in 'free love' and I am willing to do anything for the fans and the club. From the beginning of my career to its end, I will give everything on the court. I want to start anew, to turn over a new leaf with the fans," he stated.

Cornelius added that he spoke with dozens of fans after the game who clarified that the abusive individuals did not represent the majority, and most fans support him. Erez Ben Haim, the chairman of Maccabi Rishon LeZion, affirmed Cornelius's value to the team and stated that a reconciliation had occurred before his signing. Ben Haim vowed that such incidents of fans cursing or intimidating players would not happen at the club.
