Basketball Player Cornelius Seeks Fresh Start with Fans After Incident

Maccabi Rishon LeZion guard Or Cornelius refused to play in the second half of a Winner Cup game against Hapoel Eilat on Monday, citing mental inability due to curses from a small group of fans. The team won the game 87-85.

Cornelius explained to Sport Channel that the incident stemmed from past altercations with Rishon LeZion fans when he was younger, a team where he grew up playing. He stated that the past experience taught him valuable lessons about behavior and the importance of his role on the court. "I have gone through a lot in my career, drastic ups and downs," Cornelius said. "I have matured a lot and understood how much a player means on the court."

He expressed a desire to "start a new path, turn over a new leaf with the fans," emphasizing his commitment to giving his all for the team and its supporters. Cornelius mentioned speaking with numerous fans after the game who reassured him of their support. "I am a big believer in 'free love' and I am willing to do anything for the fans and the club. From the beginning of my career until the end, I will give everything on the court," he added.

Team chairman Erez Ben Haim affirmed Cornelius's value to the team and stated that a reconciliation had occurred prior to his signing this year. Ben Haim assured that such incidents, where fans curse or intimidate players, would not be tolerated at Maccabi Rishon LeZion.
