מפלגת הליכוד תקפה בחריפות את ראש הממשלה יאיר לפיד, בטענה כי הוא מטעה את הציבור ומפקיר את ביטחון ישראל. התגובה באה בעקבות דברים שאמר לפיד בנוגע לתקציב הביטחון. הליכוד הגדיר את טענות לפיד כמופרכות ושקריות, והדגיש כי ניתן להגדיל את תקציב הביטחון מבלי להעלות מיסים. לטענת הליכוד, לפיד פועל מתוך שיקולים פוליטיים צרים, אשר באים על חשבון האינטרסים הביטחוניים של המדינה.
