במהלך הלילה שבין ראשון לשני, 7 בספטמבר, שיגרו פעילי חיזבאללה שני כטב"מים לעבר כוחות צה"ל שפעלו ברכס עלי א-תאהר בדרום לבנון. לא היו נפגעים בקרב חיילי צה"ל.

בתגובה, צה"ל תקף מספר יעדי חיזבאללה במספר אזורים בדרום לבנון, כולל מחסן נשק. בנוסף, הותקפו פעילי חיזבאללה שנצפו מובילים נשק באזור כפר-רומאן.

צה"ל מסר כי לפני התקיפות ננקטו אמצעים להפחתת סיכון לאזרחים, כולל שימוש בתחמושת מדויקת ותצפית אווירית. צה"ל בודק דיווחים על פגיעה אפשרית באזרחים כתוצאה מהתקיפות.
