Border Guard Officer Fatally Shot by Police in Netanya After Opening Fire

A 20-year-old Border Guard officer, Sergeant David Hoyer Amrani, was fatally shot by police in Netanya on Saturday evening after he opened fire on officers and did not respond to calls to stop. He was evacuated to a hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead. Authorities suspect Hoyer Amrani was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Video footage from the scene shows Amrani walking down a street with a long rifle, and the sounds of gunfire are audible.

The Israel Police and Border Guard confirmed Amrani's identity after permission to publish his name was granted. He enlisted in the Border Guard in August 2024, served in Hebron, and transferred to a unit in the West Bank eight months ago. He is survived by his parents and two siblings. The police and Border Guard expressed condolences to the family and pledged continued support.

Following the incident, the chairman of the Disabled IDF Veterans Organization, Adv. Idan Kligman, called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances. He emphasized the need for the state to provide comprehensive support and treatment for soldiers dealing with trauma after their service, urging National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to order a joint inquiry by the IDF and Ministry of Defense.

Ovad Niimark, CEO of the "The Strong Ones Reveal Themselves" organization, which provides support for IDF soldiers with PTSD, echoed the call for sensitivity towards soldiers experiencing psychological distress. He stressed the importance of identifying and offering timely assistance to those in need, highlighting the organization's resilience centers as a resource for anyone struggling.
