Israel's Ben Gurion Airport Rushes Hiring to Avert Holiday Travel Chaos

Israel's main international airport, Ben Gurion, is accelerating its hiring process to prevent a repeat of the operational collapse experienced in August. The Israel Airports Authority, the Histadrut labor federation, and the airport workers' union committee reached an agreement on September 1 to expedite recruitment ahead of the busy fall holiday season. This move aims to ensure the airport's smooth functioning and high service levels for the expected surge in passengers.

The agreement was forged after a meeting involving representatives from the transport workers' union, the airport authority's leadership, and the Ministry of Finance. The parties emphasized their commitment to societal responsibility and maintaining the airport's continuous operation. They also acknowledged the dedication of airport staff during wartime conditions, including rocket fire and air raid sirens.

Ben Gurion Airport anticipates serving approximately 3 million passengers in September and early October, with 2.5 million expected at Ben Gurion itself. Peak travel days are projected for September 10, 17, and 22, and October 25, with around 100,000 passengers and 600 flights on each of these days. The highest single-day load is anticipated on September 10, the eve of Rosh Hashanah. Special flights to Uman, Ukraine, scheduled from September 6 to 17, will also contribute to passenger flow. Popular destinations include Greece, Cyprus, the United States, Italy, and the UAE.

This proactive hiring initiative comes in response to a critical staffing shortage, estimated by the workers' committee to be between 400 and 500 individuals, representing a deficit of up to 40%. The union had previously warned that this shortage could compromise service quality and lead to disruptions similar to the 2.5-hour paralysis of check-in services on August 20. The union stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive solution to avoid further chaos and ensure adequate passenger service.
