Ben Gurion Airport Reaches Labor Accord to Prevent Holiday Travel Disruptions

Following a major strike, Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) has reached an agreement with its workers' union and the Finance Ministry to ensure smooth travel during the upcoming High Holidays in September. The accord, announced Tuesday after a heated meeting, aims to prevent disruptions during the peak travel season.

Representatives from the Histadrut labor federation, the Finance Ministry, and the airport's workers' committee, led by chairman Pinchas Idan, committed to a "joint path forward" based on public responsibility and partnership. The agreement emphasizes dialogue and cooperation to address the airport authority's challenges and acknowledges the workers' efforts during wartime.

The Israel Airports Authority (IAA) is preparing for an unprecedented surge in passenger traffic, expecting over 3 million travelers across all terminals and border crossings in September and during the holidays. Ben Gurion Airport alone anticipates 2.5 million passengers, with significant numbers also expected at Ramon Airport, Haifa Airport, and land crossings to Jordan and Sinai. This influx presents a major logistical challenge.

Peak travel days are projected for September 10, 17, 22, and 25, with up to 100,000 passengers and approximately 600 daily flights expected at TLV. Leading destinations include Greece, Cyprus, the US, Italy, and the UAE. Passengers are advised to arrive significantly earlier than usual due to expected long queues.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has urged the IAA to maintain operational stability and high service levels. The IAA is increasing its workforce and management presence to handle the volume and has issued travel tips, including pre-checking terminal assignments and completing online check-ins. Separately, a "Fly & Vote" initiative is organizing flights for Israelis abroad wishing to return to vote in upcoming elections, with flights from New York costing $1,800 and from Lisbon $580.
