Israel's Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) is anticipating a significant surge in passenger traffic during the upcoming High Holidays, with four specific dates expected to see exceptionally heavy crowds. According to the Airports Authority, September 10, 17, 22, and 25 are projected to each handle approximately 100,000 travelers on around 600 flights. The busiest day is forecast to be September 10, the eve of Rosh Hashanah, when over 100,000 international passengers are expected.
Overall, the Airports Authority estimates that around 2.5 million passengers will pass through Ben Gurion Airport during September and the High Holiday period. To manage the expected volume, the authority has increased staffing and will have enhanced management presence in the terminals. This preparation follows a turbulent August, which saw 2.65 million passengers, and was marred by a dispute between the Airports Authority management and the workers' union. This dispute led to a temporary halt in landings, flight delays, cancellations, and passengers flying without their luggage.
An agreement was reached following the August crisis, involving the hiring of new staff and increased operational support. The authority blamed the union for a deliberate strike, while the union chairman cited ongoing staff shortages and overworked employees. The upcoming holiday travel period will also be affected by special flights to Uman, Ukraine, scheduled from September 6 to 17.
Beyond Ben Gurion Airport, other Israeli travel hubs are also preparing for increased activity. Ramon Airport expects about 81,000 passengers, Haifa Airport around 60,000, and land border crossings to Jordan and Sinai anticipate approximately half a million travelers. The Rabin crossing to the Arava desert is expected to see the most traffic among these, with about 190,000 passengers.
The Airports Authority advises passengers to verify their departure terminal, complete online check-in from home, and print their own luggage tags at self-service stations. Those with only carry-on luggage who have checked in online can use a fast track at Terminals 1 and 3. The authority also urged reservists and security personnel to thoroughly check their bags for any ammunition before arriving at the airport.
