Israel Aerospace Industries Nears $1 Billion Satellite Deal with Nigeria

The Nigerian government has decided to purchase two advanced communication satellites from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Thales Alenia, named NigComSat-2A and NigComSat-2B. This deal, valued at approximately one billion dollars, would be the largest satellite contract in IAI's history. IAI's missile and space division, which produces both reconnaissance and communication satellites, has built four successful Amos satellites since 1996 and launched the advanced Dror-1 satellite for the Israeli government in 2025 at a cost of $200 million.

Nigeria previously acquired communication satellites from China but faced service suspension threats due to a debt of $11.44 million. The new strategy aims to reduce Nigeria's dependence on China and expand broadband capacity to enhance digital services in underserved regions. The additional satellite capacity is expected to support education, healthcare, agriculture, financial services, and secure communications for critical national security needs.

Jane Nketchi Agerton-Aidahn, CEO of NIGCOMSAT, stated that the project represents an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria's position in the global satellite and digital economy. The first satellite is planned for launch by the end of 2028, with the second scheduled for 2029 or 2030. However, the agreement remains at a preliminary stage, and Nigeria has yet to sign binding contracts with the two companies.
