Iran and Oman Reach Agreement on Strait of Hormuz Shipping Routes Amid US Standoff

Iran's Revolutionary Guards spokesman announced on August 26 that Tehran and Muscat have reached an understanding regarding the division of shipping lanes and revenue arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran conditioned the reopening of the strategic waterway on the United States accepting its demands. The spokesman warned, "If the US does not accept our conditions, the Strait of Hormuz will not open under any circumstances."

He accused Washington of interfering in the negotiations between Iran and Oman, causing delays in finalizing the agreement. The spokesman emphasized that Iran will not compromise on its terms with the US, reiterating that the strait will remain closed until the US complies.

Meanwhile, new data from TankerTrackers revealed unusual levels of ship-to-ship oil transfers in the Gulf of Oman, where dozens of tankers are exchanging crude and refined petroleum products at sea. This activity, involving approximately 25 million barrels of crude oil, allows Gulf states to bypass the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran. Saudi supertankers carrying over four million barrels of oil were reported departing the Gulf of Oman toward China, illustrating how regional actors are adapting to the blockade.
