Gary Lineker Faces Accusations of Antisemitism Amid Controversial Social Media Posts

Gary Lineker, former football star and prominent sports broadcaster, has come under fire for sharing antisemitic content on social media following the October 7 attacks. Known for his fair play and intelligence on and off the pitch, Lineker's recent actions have shocked many, as he shared and liked posts that critics say promote antisemitic narratives and support for Hamas.

Lineker shared a clip by Tony Greenstein, an anti-Zionist activist whose father was an Orthodox rabbi, who justified the October 7 events and expressed support for Hamas as a resistance movement. Greenstein also claimed Zionism continues the Nazi legacy of persecuting Jews. Lineker’s sharing of this clip has drawn sharp criticism, with observers saying he can no longer claim ignorance. Previously, in May 2025, Lineker posted a video titled "Explaining Zionism in Under Two Minutes" featuring a rat emoji, a symbol historically used in Nazi antisemitic propaganda. Although he deleted the post and apologized, the damage was done.

Following these incidents, the BBC ended Lineker’s role as the main presenter of "Match of the Day" after 26 years, where he was the highest-paid presenter earning £1.35 million. His contract was due to expire but he was expected to continue covering major football events. The BBC also suspended him earlier for comparing British immigration language to Nazi Germany’s rhetoric. Critics accuse the BBC of an anti-Israel bias, which some say created a conducive environment for Lineker’s controversial views.

Lineker has been accused of using criticism of Israel as a cover to spread antisemitic ideas. He has called Israeli actions "crimes against humanity" and supported boycotts of Israel in international sports. Despite public backlash, Lineker remains popular among some audiences and continues to produce content on major streaming platforms. His critics demand he acknowledge and take responsibility for the antisemitic implications of his posts.
