Israeli Passengers Complain of Slow, Disrespectful Security Checks at Palermo Airport

Israeli travelers flying from Palermo to Israel last weekend reported significant delays and dismissive treatment during passport control at Palermo Airport. Passengers said only two security lanes were open, causing long waits for elderly travelers, pregnant women, and families with infants, who received no priority. The Wizz Air flight W4 6639 departed about two hours late, after 6 p.m., due to these delays.

Several passengers described security officers frequently pausing their work to chat or take breaks despite the growing queue. One traveler, Yehuda, recounted how staff responded sarcastically when asked about the delay, telling passengers to "stand quietly behind the line." Another passenger, Aharon, said some travelers were subjected to additional swab tests after passport control, likely to detect prohibited substances. Even after boarding, passengers waited an extra hour and a half for all security checks to finish.

Passengers felt the staff ignored their distress and the urgency of the flight, offering no explanations and responding with condescending remarks. This incident echoes previous complaints by Israelis about humiliating and prolonged security procedures at other European airports, such as Lyon, France, where some missed flights due to extensive checks.

The Palermo Airport has been contacted for comment, with a response pending. The episode highlights ongoing frustrations among Israeli travelers facing inefficient and disrespectful airport security abroad.
