Lucas Ventura, the Brazilian midfielder for Hapoel Be'er Sheva, stands just 90 minutes away from leading the club to its first-ever UEFA Champions League qualification. Despite not scoring a goal yet this season and having only three assists, Ventura's impact on the team is profound due to his defensive prowess and consistency. Now entering his third season with Be'er Sheva, Ventura has played 33 of 35 competitive matches last season, totaling 2,836 minutes on the pitch, showcasing remarkable durability and intensity.
Ventura's style is defined by his high number of ball recoveries and tackles, ranking eighth in the Israeli Premier League with 5.8 ball recoveries and 2.5 tackles per game. His quickness and positioning allow him to cover defensive gaps effectively, often intercepting the ball deep in the opponent's half and recovering swiftly to his position. This defensive reliability enables his teammates to advance offensively, making him both the "rock" and the "glue" of the team.
Acquired in the summer of 2024 for 600,000 euros for half of his rights, Ventura was seen as a replacement for André Poko. Despite initial doubts and a reputation as an unpolished talent, under coach Kocuch's guidance, Ventura has flourished in a classic defensive midfield role. Unlike other midfielders who contribute directly to attack with key passes or dribbles, Ventura's value lies in simplifying the game for his teammates and maintaining team structure.
Be'er Sheva's defensive lineup includes veteran players, but Ventura's role as the midfield anchor is crucial to their impressive campaign. His presence has elevated the team's overall performance, making him one of the most significant foreign players in Israeli football history. If Be'er Sheva secures Champions League qualification, Ventura's contribution will be a defining factor in this historic achievement.
