Repeated Violence Erupts Outside Israeli Premier League Football Matches

The Israeli Premier League football season 2026/27 officially resumed last weekend, bringing fans back to stadiums across the country. However, instead of celebration, the return has been marred by serious violent incidents involving fans and players outside the stadiums. Over two consecutive days, rival supporters attacked each other and opposing team players after matches.

On the opening day, Maccabi Tel Aviv fans violently assaulted Hapoel Jerusalem supporters following their match at the new stadium in Rehovot. The attackers threw stones at a vehicle carrying Hapoel Jerusalem fans, shattering its window and causing a skull fracture to the driver, who required hospitalization. Maccabi Tel Aviv condemned the violence, stating that those responsible do not represent the club or the majority of its supporters. The club pledged full cooperation with Israeli police to identify and prosecute the perpetrators. The fan organization "Brothers to the Emblem" also denounced the violence, emphasizing their longstanding commitment to promoting positive fan culture and offering support to the victims.

The following evening, after the match between Maccabi Netanya and Bnei Sakhnin, Maccabi Netanya fans attacked vehicles of Sakhin players. Erez Calfon, chairman of the Premier League management, condemned the repeated violent acts, calling on Israeli police to maintain order and protect fans, players, and officials at and near stadiums. Calfon reported that he had already urged law enforcement to increase security presence around stadiums and demanded swift and strict legal action against offenders to prevent further incidents.

These events highlight ongoing challenges with fan violence in Israeli football, prompting calls for stronger law enforcement measures to ensure safety and preserve the sport’s integrity.
