Former Maccabi Tel Aviv Star Alexander Polukarov Undergoes Leg Amputation After Bone Cancer Diagnosis

Alexander Polukarov, the former Russian defender and Maccabi Tel Aviv legend from the 1990s, recently underwent surgery to amputate part of his right leg due to bone cancer. Polukarov, 67, explained in an interview with Sport Channel that he initially had knee surgery to remove a cyst, but subsequent tests revealed a tumor in the bone. A biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of bone cancer, leading medical staff to decide on amputation to treat the condition.

The surgery took place on August 10, and Polukarov is currently recovering at home. He described feeling generally well despite some pain in the leg and is beginning to learn to walk again with crutches. He also mentioned plans to receive a prosthetic leg in the future. Polukarov expressed gratitude to fans for their concern and support.

Though he has limited contact with Israel nowadays, Polukarov shared that he still works at a school for children and is currently on medical leave. He remains hopeful about his recovery and future prospects but is uncertain about what lies ahead.
