The Altalena ship, sunk nearly 78 years ago off the coast of Israel, has been located intact at a depth of 503 meters in the Mediterranean Sea. The discovery was announced on August 24, 2026, by Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu. The search operation, conducted over recent months, utilized an advanced survey vessel equipped with specialized sensors and mapping technology. The mission was led by Roni Sade, head of the Marine Mapping Department at the Survey of Israel, with CEO Hagai Ronen calling the find a "historic and emotional moment" that connects modern technology with a significant chapter in Israel's history.

Minister Ben-Gvir described the discovery as "closing a historic circle" on one of the most painful and formative events in Israeli society. The Altalena arrived in Israel in June 1948 carrying Irgun fighters, weapons, and military equipment. The confrontation surrounding the ship became one of the most tragic episodes in the young state's history, resulting in the deaths of 16 Irgun members and three IDF soldiers.
