Altalena Ship Found Intact at 503 Meters Off Israeli Coast After Years of Search

The Altalena ship was located intact at a depth of 503 meters west of Israel's coast in the early hours between Sunday and Monday, according to Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Amichai Eliyahu. The discovery followed a complex maritime search operation using a vessel equipped with advanced sensors and survey systems, culminating months of meticulous planning and a secretive multi-year effort. The mission was initiated and led by Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu and managed by Roni Sade, head of the Marine Mapping Department at the Survey of Israel.

Roni Sade explained that reaching the shipwreck at such depth was made possible by cutting-edge technology and the dedicated work of a professional team at sea. The latest findings and underwater documentation are expected to be presented at a press conference soon. The Altalena arrived in Israel in June 1948 carrying Irgun fighters, weapons, and military equipment. The confrontation around the ship became one of the most painful and defining events in the young state’s history, resulting in the deaths of 16 Irgun members and three IDF soldiers.

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir stated, "Tonight we close a historic circle on one of the most painful and formative events in Israeli society. We worked on this matter secretly for many years, and today the fruits of intelligence and operational efforts have yielded an emotional result for historical truth, the memory of the fallen, and the unity of the Israeli people." Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu added, "Finding the Altalena is a pivotal moment for our national memory. We undertook this mission with a deep commitment to reveal historical truth and make the story of the ship’s heroes accessible to future generations."

In August 2025, Eliyahu announced at a government meeting that his ministry was exploring ways to locate the Altalena’s remains, which were shelled and sunk by the IDF off Tel Aviv’s coast in June 1948. Justice Minister Yariv Levin supported the initiative, suggesting the ship be turned into a monument symbolizing the heroism of the Revisionists. Eliyahu also mentioned efforts to bring the "holy cannon" to the Menachem Begin Heritage Center as a symbol of the man who prevented a civil war.

The Altalena affair occurred about five weeks after Israel’s establishment when the ship, purchased by the Irgun’s French branch, arrived with approximately 900 immigrants and a large cache of weapons. Menachem Begin, then Irgun commander, had agreed to integrate Irgun members into the IDF and intended to hand over the weapons to the army, requesting some be allocated to Irgun units already incorporated and those remaining in Jerusalem. Prime Minister and Defense Minister David Ben-Gurion refused to negotiate weapon distribution and demanded all arms be surrendered to the IDF. The resulting conflict led to 19 deaths and dozens wounded, marking a dramatic and painful episode symbolizing the tension between the need for a unified army and internal political divisions in Israel’s early days.
