Shoham Launches Pilot Program to Teach Math in Kindergarten for Future Graduates

In the upcoming school year, the Israeli town of Shoham will initiate a pilot program integrating mathematical thinking into kindergarten education. The program, titled "Psychopedagogy for Fostering Mathematical Thinking," aims to enhance math instruction in early childhood through professional support for educators and innovative learning tools involving play, exploration, and problem-solving. Teachers will receive guidance and resources to implement these methods effectively.

Shoham is part of the Ministry of Education's STEM initiative, which promotes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education as foundational for developing 21st-century skills such as curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, teamwork, and independent learning. The local education system is embedding STEM principles from an early age, recognizing that scientific and mathematical thinking foundations are established in early childhood.

This new math program follows the success of Shoham's space-themed kindergarten program launched this year in collaboration with the Ramon Foundation. The math curriculum includes developing concepts like numbers, counting, sets, geometric spatial organization, time concepts, and calendar use, taught through songs, finger games, and dedicated math activity centers within kindergartens.
