Haifa Beachgoers Flee as Sewage Smell and Algae Overwhelm Bat Galim Shore

Residents and bathers at Haifa's Bat Galim beach have been complaining for over a week about a strong sewage-like odor and a large accumulation of algae along the shore. One longtime local resident described the situation as unprecedented, saying the beach resembles a swamp and that the smell is so intense it makes it impossible to sit on her balcony. She noted that infrastructure work nearby may be contributing to the foul smell, though she is unsure if sewage is directly entering the sea.

Another visitor recounted how a group of about eight people, including children, had to leave the beach due to the overpowering stench of sewage. They relocated to a southern part of the beach where the smell was less intense but still noticeable alongside mud and algae.

The resident emphasized the frustration of this environmental issue occurring during peak summer season, when the beach is typically crowded. The Haifa municipality responded by stating that the algae washing ashore are a natural phenomenon. However, locals remain concerned about the ongoing unpleasant conditions and their impact on beach use.

The situation highlights environmental and public health concerns at one of Haifa's main recreational areas, with no immediate resolution announced.
