Jared Kushner Demands Hamas Commitment to Disarmament in Cairo Talks

Negotiations in Cairo continue with the United States and the Peace Council receiving intelligence indicating Hamas plans to avoid fully disarming as agreed. Jared Kushner, U.S. President Donald Trump's envoy who previously met with Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya in Gaza, now demands a clear commitment from Hamas leadership in front of all mediators. The American demand includes disarmament, halting Hamas's military buildup, and a pledge not to allow the group to rearm.

Two sources present at Kushner's meeting with al-Hayya reported that Kushner delivered a firm message to Hamas representatives: "The test will be in implementation, and if you try to deceive, the process will stop and no one will stand in Israel's way." Kushner emphasized Israel's distrust of Hamas and stressed that while Israel fulfills its obligations, Hamas must fully comply with the agreements.

Peace Council officials explained Kushner's decision to meet with al-Hayya stems from concerns that the current situation risks Israel's political isolation and perpetuates Hamas's armed control over Gaza. Kushner is determined to avoid repeating the failed approaches of the past 20 years since Hamas took over Gaza, fearing these would lead to further international isolation of Israel and strengthen Hamas militarily.

According to the Peace Council, Israel's security and maintaining its international legitimacy are central to Kushner's approach. They believe Israel can act under two scenarios: if Hamas complies, a significant threat will be removed; if not, Israel will gain international backing to confront Hamas. The Council warned that if Israel appears to obstruct the plan, it risks losing the political capital needed to change the status quo, thereby allowing Hamas to remain in power.

Hamas leaders have reportedly committed to fully implementing all 20 points of the peace plan, including disarmament clauses, in front of all mediators.
