Israeli Police Warn Tech Firms Against Enabling Fake Social Media Influence Ahead of 2026 Elections

Boaz Balat, head of the Israeli Police Investigations Division, issued an unusual warning last week to Israeli technology companies specializing in social media promotion. He urged them not to assist in illicit influence operations benefiting political parties competing in the upcoming Knesset elections. The police plan to meet with these companies and reach out to others this week to reinforce this message.

The warning follows a recent investigation revealing a network of fake profiles promoting a candidate in the Likud primaries via coordinated Facebook posts and comments in Jerusalem-based groups. These profiles were created shortly before the primaries, used AI-generated images, had no genuine activity or real friends, and acted in concert to simulate broad support. Despite this campaign, the candidate did not win.

The police fear similar tactics involving bots, fake accounts, and coordinated disinformation could be used more extensively in the 2026 elections. The Investigations and Intelligence Division has been preparing for months to monitor foreign and domestic attempts to manipulate voters through illegal means. Balat emphasized the legal risks for companies that knowingly facilitate such activities, including hiding identities or continuing services after suspicion arises.

The police outlined suspicious signs companies should watch for, such as coordinated use of multiple accounts, creation of fake content, requests to conceal client identities, use of dubious intermediaries, and attempts to spread false information about election procedures. They stressed that while a single sign may not prove wrongdoing, a combination of red flags requires thorough investigation and possibly suspension of services.

Authorities encourage tech firms to cooperate closely, report suspicious activity, and help safeguard the integrity of Israel’s democratic process. In cases of suspected election interference or cybercrime, companies should contact the Israeli Police or the Cyber Division’s foreign relations unit immediately.
