Israeli Engineer’s Art Project Challenges Parental Perfectionism Through Interactive Brain Simulation
Dr. Meital Geva, a mechanical engineer and industrial design graduate from Bezalel Academy, has created ProxyBond, an artistic project that simulates parenting by allowing users to interact with a virtual miniature brain derived from their own cells. The project, exhibited at Bezalel, offers a speculative experience where parents can train and prepare for parenthood by observing how their habits and stress responses affect the brain’s development from infancy to adolescence.
ProxyBond’s virtual child, named "Shawn," reacts unpredictably to parental decisions, often resulting in negative feedback regardless of the approach. For example, when Shawn returns home intoxicated, parents must decide how to respond, but the system detects inconsistencies between verbal and nonverbal cues, escalating Shawn’s distress. The simulation ends with irreversible damage to the brain, symbolizing the impossibility of perfect parenting. Geva emphasizes that the project is a critique of modern culture’s obsession with optimizing parenting through technology and constant self-improvement.
Geva’s inspiration partly stems from her personal experience with her mother’s illness and questions about maternal adequacy. She highlights that the concept of being a "good enough mother" is fading amid overwhelming advice, genetic testing, and developmental monitoring. The project underscores scientific findings that genetics and external environment heavily influence child development, limiting parental control.
Though ProxyBond’s clinic is fictional and contains no living brain tissue, Geva has worked with real brain organoids in her research. The exhibit aims to provoke reflection on parental anxiety and the unrealistic pursuit of perfection, encouraging compassion for both children and parents. While some visitors expressed a desire for a real product to improve parenting skills, Geva warns of the ethical challenges such technology would pose but acknowledges potential therapeutic applications.
ProxyBond represents a speculative design approach that blends developmental psychology with computational models to challenge societal expectations and open dialogue about the complexities of parenting in the digital age.
