New Driver Caught Driving 201 km/h on Road 60, Attempts to Flee Police

A 19-year-old new driver from the southern Bedouin community was caught driving at 201 km/h in a 90 km/h zone on Road 60. The incident occurred around midnight during a joint traffic enforcement operation by the National Traffic Police and the Jeep Unit of the towns, aimed at combating speeding and police evasion. When officers signaled him to stop, the driver attempted to flee and turned off his vehicle's lights. After a pursuit, police stopped the car and arrested the driver. Body camera footage captured a policewoman telling him, "Of course you're nervous. You drive and turn off the lights when you see a patrol car. Now stop here on the spike strips." The driver was taken for questioning at Be'er Sheva police station and subsequently detained. His remand was extended by the Be'er Sheva court until further notice. This enforcement is part of the "Committed to Life" national program by the Traffic Department and the National Road Safety Authority, which includes increased patrols on Israeli roads to reduce road fatalities.
