Israeli Teachers Union Sets New Boundaries on Parent-Teacher Communication Channels

The Israeli Teachers Union has clarified new guidelines following a recent directive from the Ministry of Education aimed at regulating communication between parents and educational staff. The union emphasized that personal WhatsApp numbers of teachers should not be used as a channel for school-related communication. Instead, schools are required to establish official and professional communication channels such as institutional email or other digital platforms designated by the educational institution.

The union views this directive as a crucial step in defining clear boundaries between teachers' personal and professional lives. According to the union's interpretation of section 4.7 of the ministry's directive, teachers' mobile phones and numbers are private and should not serve as service centers for parental inquiries. Yaffa Ben David, General Secretary of the Teachers Union, stated, "The private phone is not a service center, and the personal phone number is not a professional communication channel open to inquiries. Communication with teaching staff will not be conducted via their personal WhatsApp."

The guidelines require schools to inform parents in advance about the official communication channels and appropriate times to contact staff. The union stresses that the issue is not merely about limiting hours for responses but about maintaining a clear separation between teachers' personal time and work. The National Parents' Leadership expressed concerns that enforcing a single communication method, such as email only, could create unnecessary tension and harm the cooperative relationship between parents and teachers. They called for respectful dialogue and partnership, emphasizing that boundaries should be built through mutual respect and cooperation rather than unilateral enforcement.

The directive aims to regulate appropriate contact times and foster respectful communication without causing alienation or conflict between parents and educational staff. School administrations and staff are encouraged to work with their communities to define the most effective and respectful communication methods, balancing the needs of children with respect for teachers' privacy and personal time.
