Israeli Poultry Council Warns Against Buying Unregulated Eggs from Neighborhood Sellers

In recent years, a growing trend has emerged in ultra-Orthodox communities across Israel where families purchase eggs from informal neighborhood sales, distribution points, or directly from vehicles parked near their homes. Buyers often believe these eggs are fresh, natural, and cheaper since they come "directly from the coop." However, health experts and the Israeli Poultry Council warn that eggs sold outside regulated channels pose significant health risks.

The council explains that eggs from unmonitored sources do not meet mandatory health and safety standards. They lack comprehensive quality checks, proper inspection for cracks, controlled packaging, and official stamps that guarantee freshness and safety. Additionally, transporting eggs in private vehicles without continuous refrigeration, especially in Israel's hot climate, severely compromises egg quality and increases the risk of bacterial contamination.

To protect consumers, the Poultry Council urges the public to buy only stamped eggs from authorized stores and supermarkets that source from licensed suppliers. They recommend three key rules: purchase only eggs with official stamps, buy from authorized retailers, and maintain continuous refrigeration from purchase until use. These measures ensure consumer safety and prevent health hazards associated with informal egg sales.

The council's call aims to raise awareness, dispel misconceptions about informal egg sales, and promote responsible purchasing habits to safeguard family health. "From now on," they emphasize, "buy eggs only from authorized sources."
