Israel Launches New Track to Hire 8,000 Teachers With Salaries Up to 20,000 Shekels

In response to a severe teacher shortage, Israel's Ministry of Education has introduced a new employment track aimed at recruiting approximately 8,000 teachers under personal contracts. These contracts offer salaries up to 20,000 shekels per month for full-time positions and are designed to attract professionals without prior teaching experience but with relevant academic and professional backgrounds.

The new program allows schools to hire individuals from outside traditional teaching pathways, offering pay based on education level, professional experience, and teaching experience. For example, a teacher with a bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or prior teaching can earn 17,500 shekels monthly. Those with a master's degree and similar experience can earn up to 18,500 shekels, while teachers with a master's degree plus experience teaching math, English, or science can reach 19,500 shekels.

Contracts will initially be signed for one academic year (10 months) with the possibility of renewal, but employment under this track is limited to a maximum of five years. Teachers hired this way will not be part of the teachers' union and will work only in regular education at elementary and middle schools. Additionally, the program includes retention incentives, such as a bonus of up to 20,000 shekels for teachers who complete one year and continue for another.

This initiative aims to alleviate the critical shortage of educators by integrating professionals from other fields into classrooms, enriching the education system with diverse expertise. However, the offered salaries remain significantly lower than those in high-tech sectors, highlighting ongoing challenges in attracting talent.
