Heavy August Rains Cause Rare Flooding in Jerusalem and West Bank, Authorities Warn of Continued Storms

Unseasonal heavy rains and flash floods struck Jerusalem and the West Bank over the weekend, with Maale Adumim recording a record-breaking 21 millimeters of rain in just one hour, totaling about 25 millimeters for the day. Significant rainfall was also measured in the Gush Etzion kibbutz of Rosh Tzurim and central Jerusalem, leading to the first documented flood of the season in Nahal Og in northern Judean Desert.

The intense weather caused major flooding in several neighborhoods in southern and eastern Jerusalem, prompting firefighters to respond to multiple emergencies and rescue residents trapped by rising waters. The fire and rescue services urged the public to exercise extreme caution, avoid underground areas, parking garages, and elevators during floods, and stay away from water channels and other hazardous zones.

The Israel Police and the Judea and Samaria District (Shai) have deployed reinforced forces in preparation for continued severe weather expected through the week. The meteorological service forecasts further heavy rains tomorrow afternoon and evening, with a serious risk of flash floods in the Judean Desert streams and the Dead Sea area. Police have warned the public to avoid high-risk areas, especially hiking trails and riverbeds prone to sudden flooding, emphasizing the life-threatening danger. Officers will be stationed at key roads and hotspots to ensure public safety and provide rapid assistance if needed. Authorities advise planning travel routes carefully, following police instructions, and staying updated on road closures.
