London Man Sentenced to Over Six Years for Antisemitic Assault on Jewish Caretaker

A 51-year-old London resident, Alfonso Pena, was sentenced to six years and six months in prison for stabbing a Jewish building caretaker in an antisemitic hate crime. The incident occurred on July 31, 2025, in a rental apartment building in a London suburb and has been publicly reported for the first time following the sentencing at Croydon Crown Court.

The case began when another tenant accused Pena of stealing food from the shared kitchen. When the caretaker confronted Pena with security footage confirming the theft, Pena, who was heavily intoxicated, responded by verbally abusing the caretaker with antisemitic slurs, calling him a "Jewish terrorist," before fleeing the scene. Pena then returned and stabbed the caretaker in the back between the shoulders.

During the trial, Pena admitted to the assault and possession of the knife but denied intent, with his defense claiming he suffered a psychiatric episode at the time. However, the British Crown Prosecution Service pursued the case as a hate crime, and the jury found Pena guilty of intentional injury. The court recognized the victim’s religion as an aggravating factor, leading to a harsher sentence.

Senior prosecutor Subhi-Marja Matila condemned the attack as a violent and frightening act motivated by antisemitism, emphasizing that such hatred has no place in communities. She expressed hope that the increased sentence would send a clear message that hate-motivated violence will be met with accountability. The Crown Prosecution Service affirmed its commitment to working with police to uphold justice in hate crime cases.
