IDF Warns Settler Violence in Palestinian Village Could Ignite Wider West Bank Conflict

Tensions remain high in the Palestinian village of Khosra, south of Nablus, amid ongoing settler violence that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) fear could escalate across the West Bank. On Friday evening, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi reportedly stated in closed discussions that the military must prioritize threats from Iran, Lebanon, and Gaza, warning that a violent outbreak in the West Bank would divert IDF resources from these fronts.

A senior IDF officer criticized Defense Minister Israel Katz's decision to transfer responsibility for civil enforcement in the West Bank to the Israeli police, noting that while police and Border Police should increase their efforts, they currently fall short. Meanwhile, Israel's ambassador to the United States, Yacov Hadas-Handelsman, joined U.S. Ambassador Mike Herzog in condemning the violent incidents in Khosra. Hadas-Handelsman emphasized that such lawless actions distort the concept of settling the land of Israel and divert security forces from their duties.

On Friday morning, settlers were documented returning to Khosra to attempt rebuilding illegal structures on Palestinian homes, despite Palestinian families remaining confined in their houses, with at least one home still occupied by the IDF. The situation remains volatile following IDF seizures of some homes in the area.

Defense Minister Katz held a meeting with Kochavi and senior military officials to discuss West Bank security and instructed the IDF to prepare a plan to transfer all civil enforcement authority concerning Israeli settlements and population in the territories to the Israeli police. Katz stated that the IDF's role should focus on combating Palestinian terrorism and protecting borders and settlements, rather than policing minor incidents among youth in the hills, emphasizing that law enforcement and maintaining order should be the police's responsibility.
