Former Mossad Chief Yossi Cohen Highlights UK-Israel Security Cooperation and Criticizes British Government's Stance

Yossi Cohen, former head of Mossad from 2016 to 2021, revealed in a recent interview on the British-produced podcast "The General and the Journalist" that Israeli intelligence efforts have saved many lives on British soil. He emphasized the longstanding intelligence sharing between Israel and the UK, quoting a former MI5 chief who praised Cohen's role in disrupting significant terrorist activities within Britain.

Cohen criticized the British government's recent approach toward Israel, particularly its public criticism and consideration of sanctions against Israel amid the conflict in Gaza. He argued that while criticism is acceptable, opposing Israel's defensive actions is not, stressing that Israel did not initiate the Gaza war but responded to terrorism from Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Cohen also highlighted the dangers faced by Jews in UK cities like London and Manchester, urging the British government to support Israel as Israel has supported the UK against terrorism.

Addressing political rhetoric, Cohen condemned British leaders who accuse Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, noting that no British prime minister has officially made such claims. He cited 2025 statements from UK government lawyers who found no evidence of intentional attacks on civilians by Israel and acknowledged Israel's efforts to minimize civilian harm.

Additionally, Cohen recounted Mossad's intimidation tactics against Iranian nuclear scientists, which led some to abandon their positions in Tehran. He described sending symbolic warnings to these scientists, signaling Israel's awareness of their work and potential targeting.

This interview comes after UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham publicly apologized for his Labour Party's handling of Israel-related issues in late 2023 but maintained intentions to consider sanctions and hold the Israeli government accountable for policies undermining a two-state solution.
