Netanyahu Labels UK 'Islamic Republic' in Podcast Criticism of London

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sparked controversy by referring to the United Kingdom as the "Islamic Republic of Britain" during a recent podcast appearance. Speaking on Avi Harush's "King Beletser Chaim" podcast, Netanyahu criticized the current British media landscape, contrasting it with the past when Randolph Churchill, son of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, positively covered Israel's Six-Day War. Netanyahu suggested that such supportive coverage is now impossible in Britain, which he disparagingly called the "Islamic Republic of Britain."

When asked if this characterization applied to all of Europe, Netanyahu alluded to a statement made two years ago by former U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance, who warned that the first Islamic republic to acquire nuclear weapons might be Britain. Netanyahu said Israel is committed to preventing another nuclear-armed Islamic republic like Iran.

The remarks drew swift criticism from Avi Dabush of the "Democrats" party, who responded on X (formerly Twitter), reminding Netanyahu of his responsibilities as prime minister and condemning his jokes about Britain, a permanent member of the UN Security Council and a country six times larger than Israel.

Despite the Labour government under Andy Burnham being critical of Israel, the UK remains an important European ally with deep ties to Israel across various sectors. Netanyahu's comments are likely to provoke diplomatic tensions between Jerusalem and London.
