Israel Deploys AI-Powered Traffic Lights to Cut Commute Times by 10 Minutes
Israel's National Roads Company has introduced an advanced artificial intelligence-based adaptive traffic light system currently operating at around 170 intercity intersections nationwide. Early data reveals the technology significantly reduces traffic congestion and shortens driver wait times, saving an average of 400 vehicle hours daily per intersection. This translates to roughly 10 minutes saved per trip for individual drivers, amounting to nearly two weeks of work time annually.
Unlike traditional traffic lights that follow fixed schedules, the adaptive system uses cameras and computer vision to monitor real-time traffic flow and queue lengths up to several hundred meters. It dynamically adjusts green light durations based on current demand, preventing unnecessary stops and optimizing existing road infrastructure. Notable improvements include an 800-hour daily vehicle time saving at the Fordis junction and a 56-second reduction per vehicle at the entrance to Kiryat Tivon.
The project aims to expand to 100 smart intersections, potentially saving the Israeli economy over half a billion shekels annually. The next phase involves synchronizing multiple smart intersections along traffic corridors to maximize efficiency and avoid offsetting gains between junctions. Eitan Zilberstein, head of technology at National Roads, stated the goal is to convert all 750 signalized intersections to adaptive systems within five years, ensuring continuous monitoring and responsible rollout. He emphasized that a fully integrated network will accumulate small time savings into substantial reductions in travel time and fuel consumption for the public.
