Chief Rabbi of Israel Meets Moldovan Jewish Leader Amid Community Revival

The Jewish community in Moldova is experiencing a significant revival, marked by a historic meeting in Chișinău between Israel's Chief Rabbi Kalman Bar and Moldova's newly appointed Chief Rabbi and community chairman, Alex Blitsky. The meeting, described as a once-in-a-lifetime event, highlighted the community's growth and ongoing efforts to preserve Jewish heritage and memory.

Blitsky recalled that when he first became community chairman, only one synagogue, Chovevei, was active in Chișinău. Today, there are four synagogues, and spiritual life is flourishing. The Moldovan Jewish community currently numbers around 15,000 people and operates through ten urban centers across the country. This expansion is supported by close cooperation with local Chabad rabbis and emissaries, who lead much of the community's spiritual activities.

The community infrastructure now includes a Jewish library, a community center, two schools, two kindergartens, and four active synagogues, providing residents with a strong sense of security and belonging. Over the past 30 years, more than 30 Holocaust and war memorials have been established throughout Moldova. A key future goal is to open the country's first official Jewish museum to honor both the community's historical achievements and the memory of Holocaust victims.

The meeting emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration among various community institutions, with participants praising Chișinău's Jewish community as a model for others worldwide. Chief Rabbi Bar expressed deep appreciation for the community's dedication, its strengthening ties with Israel, and the leadership's commitment. The visit concluded with shared hopes for continued development of educational, cultural, and religious institutions to ensure a secure and prosperous future for Moldova's Jews.
