Ultra-Orthodox Protest Planned in Central Israel Over Draft Evasion Arrest

Ultra-Orthodox protesters are expected to demonstrate today in central Israel against the arrest of a draft evader. The protests will be led by the Haratzpunim, a radical faction within the Jerusalem faction, and will take place on Highway 4 from the Aluf Sadeh interchange to the Em HaMoshavot interchange between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., likely causing significant traffic delays and road closures.

The demonstrators are protesting the detention of a yeshiva student who was reportedly summoned to testify at Lahav 433, Israel's national crime unit, but was handed over to the military police at the end of the interrogation. Police denied claims of wrongdoing, stating that the suspect was summoned for questioning at Lahav 433 on suspicion of serious criminal offenses. Once it was confirmed that the suspect was wanted by the military police, the police followed standard procedures and transferred the information accordingly.

This protest comes amid heightened tensions over military conscription among the ultra-Orthodox community, with Prime Minister Netanyahu recently warning that those who do not study Torah and refuse to enlist will face imprisonment. The day also saw large demonstrations outside the Attorney General's residence and warnings from the Gur Hasidic leader.
