Singer Chen Amsalem Highlights Shingles Risk Among Young Adults on Social Media

Israeli singer Chen Amsalem recently shared on Instagram that she is battling shingles, a condition typically associated with older adults. Her post sparked numerous responses from young women who also reported contracting the disease, raising awareness about shingles appearing in younger populations. Shingles, or herpes zoster, is caused by the reactivation of the Varicella Zoster virus, which remains dormant in the nervous system after a chickenpox infection and can resurface years later.

According to the Israeli Ministry of Health, shingles manifests as a painful rash with blisters, usually on the back, chest, head, or limbs, accompanied by itching and significant pain. While the risk increases with age and immune system weakness, younger individuals can also develop the disease without necessarily having immune deficiencies. The exact triggers for the virus's reactivation are not always identifiable, though a weakened immune system is a primary factor.

One serious complication of shingles is postherpetic neuralgia, a prolonged nerve pain that can last weeks or months after the rash disappears. This risk is higher in older adults and immunocompromised patients. When the disease affects areas like the eye, additional complications may arise, underscoring the importance of timely diagnosis and treatment.

Vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce the risk of shingles and its complications. Israel offers a shingles vaccine, and the U.S. CDC recommends two doses of Shingrix for individuals aged 50 and above, as well as for those 19 and older with weakened immune systems. The vaccine is over 90% effective in preventing shingles and postherpetic neuralgia in healthy adults over 50.

Chen Amsalem's social media post has brought renewed attention to shingles in younger people, emphasizing that the disease is not exclusive to the elderly. Awareness of symptoms and preventive measures is crucial, especially for those in at-risk groups.
