Experts Advise Proper Use of Bathroom Ventilation Fans to Prevent Mold and Moisture Damage
Many people turn on their bathroom ventilation fan only during their shower and switch it off immediately afterward, but experts warn this common practice may contribute to mold growth and moisture damage. To effectively reduce humidity, it is recommended to turn on the fan before entering the shower and keep it running throughout the shower to start removing moisture as soon as steam forms.
The critical mistake occurs after showering, when many turn off the fan right away despite the bathroom remaining humid. Walls, tiles, towels, and other surfaces continue releasing moisture into the air, so experts advise keeping the fan running for 15 to 30 minutes after finishing the shower. In bathrooms without windows or with poor ventilation, the fan may need to operate even longer. Installing a timer or a humidity sensor fan can automate this process.
Regular maintenance is also essential. Dust accumulation on the fan’s grille, blades, and internal parts can reduce airflow and efficiency, so cleaning the grille every few months and performing a thorough internal cleaning about once a year is recommended. Additionally, the fan must exhaust moist air outside the home; venting into an attic or wall cavity merely relocates moisture, risking mold and insulation damage.
The fan’s size should match the bathroom’s volume to handle the moisture load effectively. For optimal operation, the bathroom door should not be sealed tightly; leaving a small gap under the door allows fresh air to enter as the fan expels humid air. Proper use and maintenance of bathroom ventilation fans can significantly reduce moisture buildup and prevent mold and structural damage.
