Israeli Filmmaker Guy Nattiv’s New Thriller 'The Liberation' Premieres at Toronto Film Festival
Israeli filmmaker Guy Nattiv will present his latest film, The Liberation, at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, the largest of its kind worldwide. The tense drama, inspired by Nattiv’s own family story, centers on a Holocaust survivor modeled after his grandmother, Rita Cooper, who is drawn away from her family by a hedonistic female cult promising a new life. Nattiv, now based in Los Angeles with his wife Jamie Ray Newman, directs a strong cast led by Carrie Coon in the demanding lead role, alongside Bella Ramsey, Odessa Young, and Lily James as the cult leader. Tracy Letts, Coon’s partner, plays her on-screen husband. The project was first announced in 2019, focusing on Nattiv’s effort to bring his grandmother’s remains to Israel after she died in the US while involved with the cult and was buried in a Native American cemetery. This is Nattiv’s fourth American project since leaving Israel, following Skin, Golda, and Tatami, and marks a renewed collaboration with New York producer Oren Moverman. The Liberation will have its Canadian premiere at Toronto, suggesting its world premiere will take place the previous weekend at the prestigious Telluride Festival in Colorado.
The Toronto festival, opening on September 10, also features several highly anticipated films, including Being Heumann by Sean Heder, a period drama about disability rights activism in the 1970s. A major highlight is Alex Gibney’s extensive documentary on Elon Musk, exploring the billionaire’s life and vision over four hours. The American production company A24 is well represented with two films about the entertainment industry: The Debut, directed by Jesse Eisenberg, and Misty Greene, Chris Rock’s directorial debut starring Rosalind Eleazar. Other notable films include Jennifer Peedom’s Tenzing, about the Nepalese climber Tenzing Norgay’s Everest ascent, and the sci-fi comedy Alpha Gang by David and Nathan Zellner.
In the Israeli sector, producer Lee Broda contributes the thriller Housewife, following a New York Times reporter investigating a Nazi officer living in the city who becomes fascinated with his wife. Directed by Ben Shirinian, the film stars Luke Evans, Naomi Watts, Norman Reedus, Ty Sheridan, and Michael Imperioli. The Toronto festival serves as a key preview for the upcoming Hollywood awards season, showcasing a diverse slate of international and American cinema.
