Military Prosecution Yet to Assign Prosecutors for Negev Terrorist Trials, Death Penalty Sought

As of now, military prosecutors have not been assigned to handle the trials of hundreds of Negev terrorists responsible for the October 7 massacre, according to a report by Kan News on Tuesday evening. A senior official in the military prosecution criticized the lack of funding and the inability to initiate legal proceedings due to the absence of appointed prosecutors. The official warned that delays could undermine the evidence.

Kan News also revealed that the military prosecution intends to seek death sentences in these cases for the first time. However, they acknowledge that such demands will likely face challenges before the Israeli Supreme Court (Bagatz).

The IDF responded that six officers have been appointed to various roles and are expected to begin their duties soon. Employment terms for other positions, including civilian prosecutors, have not yet been finalized but are under ongoing discussion with relevant government bodies. The military confirmed that funding for the project was transferred to the IDF in recent weeks.

Separately, it was reported that the Chief of Staff opposed transferring the legal handling of the Negev terrorists to the IDF. Initial agreements have been reached regarding the prosecution of the Negev terrorists.
