Apple Plans First Foldable iPhone Launch in September Alongside New Devices

Apple is set to unveil its first foldable iPhone at a September 2026 event, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models, new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, and upgrades to Siri, camera, and battery. According to Bloomberg and reporter Mark Gurman, the foldable iPhone will open like a book with a 4:3 aspect ratio, resembling a blend between an iPhone and an iPad Mini, featuring an OLED screen and iPad-like functions. Apple is already planning second and third-generation foldable models for 2027 and 2028 with slightly larger screens.

The foldable design marks what Gurman calls "the most significant change in iPhone history." The device will differ from most current foldables by being wider than tall when opened. The launch event is expected on Wednesday, September 9. Alongside the foldable iPhone, Apple will reveal the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, a new Apple TV streamer, a new HomePod mini or HomePod Touch smart home device, and significant performance upgrades for the Apple Watch line, including possible ceramic bodies, new colors, bands, and health and fitness enhancements.

Reports suggest the iPhone 18 series may see price increases due to rising memory costs linked to AI industry demands, with a rumored starting price of around $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro in the US. The new iPhones will feature the A20 chip, 12GB RAM in base Pro models, improved cellular connectivity with a new C2 modem, enhanced Wi-Fi, and expanded 5G satellite capabilities. Camera upgrades may include a variable aperture system for sharper images and more natural portraits. Battery life improvements are expected, especially in the Pro Max model.

The devices will ship with iOS 27 and an upgraded Siri powered by Apple Intelligence, designed to better understand on-screen content and perform actions accordingly. Color options for the iPhone 18 Pro are rumored to include dark gray, silver, light blue, and dark cherry. Apple has not officially confirmed any details. Notably absent from the latest reports are new AirPods with cameras, a third-generation HomePod, or a security camera, which had been mentioned in earlier rumors.
