Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks Over Israel With Ideal Moonless Skies and Stargazing Events

The Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak on the night between August 12 and 13, coinciding with the new moon, providing exceptionally dark skies ideal for meteor viewing. The absence of moonlight will allow observers to see the meteors more clearly, with the best viewing hours from midnight to dawn. The Israel Nature and Parks Authority recommends several dark-sky locations in the Negev Desert, including Har Kipa, Har Ardon, Beerot, and Mitzpeh Makhtesh Katan, as well as northern sites like Mount Shifon and Gova Hagdola near Odem in the Golan Heights.

In the Negev, various stargazing activities will be held, such as "Stars Falling in the Hidden Corners of Nitzana," combining desert hikes with guided night sky observations. The "Way of the Tents" program will offer cultural experiences with local desert residents, including shepherd encounters, traditional bread baking, and desert tracking workshops led by experienced guides.

In the Central Arava region, a special Perseid viewing event will take place on August 13, led by astronomy guides Alon Goldstein and Rotem Regev at a secluded, dark site near the cliffs. The event will feature guided star observations, telescope viewing, and a campfire with refreshments starting at 9 p.m. Throughout August, Goldstein and Regev will also conduct regular guided stargazing sessions, including mythology explanations and constellation identification.

Other desert-themed activities include nocturnal wildlife tours, ancient skills workshops, and eco-desert tours led by brothers Ben and Oren Fritel from Moshav Idan. These include night tracking of desert animals using UV flashlights and traditional crafts such as fire making, clay sculpting, and stone carving.
