Israeli Police Arrest Southern Crime Boss in Major Extortion Crackdown

Israeli police arrested the head of a prominent crime organization in southern Israel early Tuesday morning during a large-scale operation targeting extortion and protection rackets against delivery workers. The arrest took place at a hotel as part of "Operation Relay Race," which focuses on combating criminal groups involved in coercion and illegal activities in the region. Alongside the crime boss, dozens of other suspects were detained in raids conducted in Ashdod, Kiryat Gat, and other locations.

The suspects are accused of extortion, threats, and other criminal offenses that have undermined public security. The arrests followed an extensive investigation by the Southern District police, which gathered evidence against key figures in the criminal network. The detainees were transferred to the Central Unit of the Lachish region for interrogation and are expected to appear in court later Tuesday for detention extension hearings.

Police Commissioner Danni Levi praised the operation, stating, "The Israel Police continues to act decisively against serious and organized crime groups. We will dismantle the infrastructure of protection rackets throughout the country." The operation involved detectives from the Lahav 433 unit, National Guard fighters from the Border Police, and officers from the Special Patrol Unit, working together to execute the raids and arrests.

This crackdown is part of ongoing efforts by Israeli law enforcement to disrupt organized crime networks that exploit vulnerable workers and threaten community safety in southern Israel.
