Israeli Police Arrest Dozens in Major Southern Crackdown on Extortion Networks

Israeli police conducted a large-scale enforcement operation early Tuesday morning across the southern region, including Ashdod and Kiryat Gat, resulting in the arrest of dozens of suspects linked to extortion and protection rackets. The arrests followed a lengthy undercover investigation led by the Central Unit of the Lachish district in cooperation with the Border Police's National Guard fighters.

The months-long probe focused on systematic extortion and threats that undermined public safety and the sense of security among southern residents. Evidence was gathered against numerous key suspects in the southern district and other involved parties. At dawn, police units including the Lachish district detectives, Border Police National Guard, and special police forces raided the homes of the suspects simultaneously at multiple locations.

The detainees were taken for interrogation at the Lachish district's Central Unit and are expected to appear in court later Tuesday where police will seek to extend their detention. Police Commissioner Major General Danny Levi emphasized the ongoing commitment to dismantling organized crime networks, stating, "The Israel Police continues to act decisively against serious and organized crime groups, and we will dismantle the protection rackets infrastructure throughout the country."
