Trump Orders Reduction of Childhood Vaccines Amid Autism Concerns
On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a new executive order aimed at revising childhood vaccination policies. The administration plans to reduce the number of vaccines routinely recommended for young children, focusing on 11 key vaccines against serious diseases. Vaccines such as hepatitis B, influenza, and COVID-19 will no longer be universally recommended for all children. The new policy proposes categorizing vaccines into three groups based on necessity and risk, and controversially suggests separating the combined MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine into three individual shots, contradicting long-standing medical consensus.
Trump has repeatedly questioned the current vaccination schedule, linking the increase in autism diagnoses to the rise in the number of vaccines administered to children. He stated, "Decades ago, children received far fewer vaccines, and people were much healthier, with lower autism rates." He noted that autism prevalence was once about one in 10,000 children, now approximately one in 30, and suggested there is a cause behind this "epidemic." However, Trump acknowledged that the exact cause of autism remains unknown and emphasized the importance of having the best vaccine recommendations to support research efforts.
The scientific community has documented the rise in autism diagnoses but has found no causal link between vaccines and autism, including extensive studies on the MMR vaccine. The increase in autism rates is largely attributed to expanded diagnostic criteria, greater awareness, and improved detection methods.
In contrast to the U.S. policy shift, Israel maintains a broad vaccination schedule starting at birth, recently updating its routine immunizations to provide earlier protection against measles and other diseases amid ongoing outbreaks. The American debate is expected to intensify, focusing not only on vaccine quantity but also on the contentious question of what drives the rise in autism diagnoses and whether vaccines play any role.
