Avigdor Bechar Rejects Likud Offer, Calls for Fundamental Change in Gaza Policy

Avigdor Bechar, who lost his wife and son in the October 7 attacks, strongly criticized the ongoing empowerment of Hamas and called for a fundamental shift in Israel's approach to Gaza. Speaking on August 10, 2026, Bechar dismissed the idea that Hamas would ever disarm voluntarily, stating that expecting such an outcome is unrealistic. He emphasized that Hamas continues to strengthen just four kilometers from the border and warned against any agreement that would leave Hamas armed.

Bechar urged Israel to adopt a firm stance that it no longer wants Hamas in Gaza and to push the international community to take responsibility for the territory. He expressed a desire for the events of October 7 to be remembered as a catastrophe for Hamas, marking the end of their control over the land. While he does not want to settle in Gaza himself, he insists the area cannot remain under Hamas control.

He also criticized the idea of creating a security buffer zone as insufficient, pointing out that attacks could still reach nearby communities and even Tel Aviv. Bechar lamented Israel's lack of decisive action, saying the country continues to suffer repeated attacks because it fails to change the status quo.

When asked about the possibility of joining the Likud party list with a reserved spot, Bechar firmly rejected the offer. He stated he would not join any framework that lacks responsibility or ignores the current security situation. Instead, he is focused on rebuilding his home, family, and kibbutz after his personal losses.

Bechar’s comments come amid ongoing debates about Israel’s strategy toward Gaza and the future of Hamas, highlighting deep frustrations with the current political and security approaches.
