Israeli State Sues Crocodile Farm Operator Over Safety Failures and Costs

The Israeli State Attorney's Office has filed a lawsuit seeking over one million shekels from the operator of a crocodile farm in Ptzal, located in the Jordan Valley. The suit alleges that persistent safety and animal welfare violations at the farm forced state authorities to intervene repeatedly over 14 years, culminating in the culling of 270 crocodiles due to immediate threats to human life.

According to the lawsuit, the farm experienced a significant crocodile escape incident in 2011, after which the state conducted numerous inspections, warnings, hearings, and demands for corrective measures. Despite these efforts, the farm operator allegedly ignored official directives, failed to address the safety and security deficiencies, and continued operations, thereby maintaining ongoing risks to both humans and animals.

Veterinary assessments cited in the case described the conditions at the farm as amounting to cruelty and neglect, with some crocodiles found severely injured, including cases of cannibalism and mutilation caused by fights over territory. Due to these failures, the state had to take over security measures, including fencing and supervision, and ultimately euthanize 270 crocodiles after exhausting all alternatives.

The lawsuit demands that the farm operator reimburse the state for all expenses incurred from these interventions, arguing that the public treasury should not bear costs resulting from the operator's negligence. This legal action highlights the state's efforts to enforce animal welfare and public safety standards in agricultural enterprises.
