Senior Israeli Expert Warns of US Weakness Amid Trump-Iran Tensions

Professor Uzi Rabi, a senior researcher at Tel Aviv University's Dayan Center for Middle Eastern Studies, expressed concerns over recent developments involving the United States, Iran, and Israel during a 103FM interview on August 10, 2026. He highlighted a perceived significant weakness in the US under President Donald Trump, which Iran is reportedly exploiting. Rabi cautioned that Israel must recognize these shifts and develop a strategic response to safeguard its interests.

Rabi noted that the current reality extends beyond Israel's immediate control and that some recent events are unpredictable and problematic, while others may offer strategic advantages. He suggested that Trump might be redefining the concept of "victory" to create an exit strategy, though he refrained from speculating on Trump's intentions. Addressing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's opposition to the 15-point peace plan concerning Gaza's future, Rabi argued that Israel should not withdraw from Gaza without fully disarming Hamas. He expressed skepticism that Hamas would voluntarily disarm, warning against irreversible Israeli concessions in exchange for reversible outcomes. Rabi stressed that Israel currently controls two-thirds of Gaza's territory and must avoid piecemeal withdrawals that could have long-term negative consequences.
