Expert Warns Israel Has Become a Toxic Brand in US Politics Amid Waning Support

Professor Yossi Shain, an expert on US affairs, issued a stark warning about Israel's declining standing in American politics, stating that hostility toward Israel has become a politically profitable tool. He emphasized that even within the Republican Party and the White House, support for Israel is weakening. Shain described being anti-Israel, particularly anti-Israel-Palestinian conflict, as a "hot, rewarding commodity" in the US political arena, noting that the once-prevailing perception of Israel's strength and the power of its lobby has collapsed.

Shain also addressed the possibility of a US-Iran agreement, expressing skepticism that such a deal will materialize. He said Israel would welcome an agreement but doubted it would happen, especially as future US administrations are unlikely to be as committed as previous ones. He criticized the US for not following through on actions against Iran after initial cooperation, which he said has eroded Israel's influence and America's willingness to be drawn into conflict on Israel's behalf.

Regarding former President Donald Trump, Shain noted concerns that his failure to take decisive action might be costing him support even among his base. He highlighted a campaign framing Israel as committing genocide, which has permeated intellectual and political discourse, including American education.

Shain concluded with a warning that unless Israel changes its leadership to one perceived as reasonable in America, it risks losing all supporters in Washington, including the White House. He described the current situation as a deep crisis beyond mere election politics.
