IDF Reserves Commemorate 20 Years Since Fatal Hezbollah Rocket Attack on Kfar Giladi

On August 7, 2006, during the Second Lebanon War, a Hezbollah-fired Katyusha rocket struck the entrance plaza of Kibbutz Kfar Giladi at noon, killing 12 reservists from the IDF's 226th Brigade who were assembling there. Last Friday, exactly 20 years later, soldiers and commanders from the 226th Brigade and the 9255th Battalion held a memorial ceremony near the "Roaring Lion" monument in Tel Hai to honor their fallen comrades.

Among those attending was Doron Alon, now a company sergeant major residing in Haifa. Alon, who enlisted in November 2000 in the Paratroopers Brigade, was in the United States when the war began but returned to Israel within 24 hours. On August 6, he joined his unit in Lebanon after missing their initial entry and waited in the kibbutz's central lawn area, unaware that another group of soldiers was sheltering outside the kibbutz entrance under trees near the cemetery.

Alon recalled the morning of the attack, describing how the public shelter was closed and how they initially thought the rocket blast had passed them by. Minutes later, he saw a sergeant major covered in blood running toward them, signaling the severity of the attack. The scene at the entrance was chaotic, with many forces and international media present. This was Alon's first day back in reserve duty after three years of active service.

Reflecting on the tragedy, Alon admitted that early on, there was anger and blame toward the kibbutz for not admitting the soldiers inside, but over time, he and others understood that no one intended harm. The 20th-anniversary ceremony also marked Alon's first return to Kfar Giladi since the attack, which he described as a closing of a painful chapter. He expressed gratitude for the kibbutz community's ongoing support in organizing the memorial.

Despite the passage of two decades, the operational reality has called reservists back to the northern border multiple times, including during the recent "Iron Swords" operation. Alon, now a father, has served nearly 700 reserve days in the past three years and emphasized the ongoing duty to defend Israel, acknowledging that future generations will also be called to serve.
